Welcome
[./your_church3pag.html]
Above - Harvest Festival 1937 The Stone Laying Ceremony took place on Wednesday, 22nd April, 1863. The proceedings commenced with the preaching of a sermon in the Corn Exchange the stone was laid at four o'clock by Frances Lycett. Esq., of London (later Sir Francis Lycett). Tea followed at half-past five and the proceedings closed with a public meeting in the Corn Exchange at 7 o'clock, addressed by the Rev. W. Arthur, author of "The Tongue of Fire," a well-known Methodist classic of those days. The Church had only a small vestry at the front and another small vestry at the back and this accommodation proved inadequate for the needs of a growing society. True, there was the Wesleyan Day and Sunday School in East Street (later the Empire Picture Hall and in 1932 the Plaza Picture Palace) and many meetings were held there. After a few years it was decided to extend the Church premises. Land was purchased at the rear of the Church and the Guild Rooms and Vestries were built. The foundation stones were laid in May, 1899. New names appear on the list of the Trustees, who carried through the scheme. Alfred Shrubsall, John Andrews, Edward Bishop, Benjamin Feamley, James T. Harris, Wm. Henry Roper, Henry Willis, J. A. Searle, Norris Andrews, Thomas Sims Cocking, Isaac Croucher and Wm. Robert Orr. The next development is the building of the School Hall. It appears that the Methodist had some school premises in East Street as far back as 1834.
