Welcome

These premises had been enlarged in 1874, and used as a Day School and Sunday School.
The Education Act in the early part of the century brought about the closing of the Day School. So it was decided to sell these premises, they were acquired by a small company in the cinematography industry and in around 1911 were opened as the 'Empire Picture Hall' which became Sittingbourne's first cinema. The proceeds of the sale enabled the church to build a School Hall adjoining the Church and a Guild Room.
A new Church Trust was formed to carry this project through. Among these names were found several who are no longer with us, Robert Bradley, G. W. Matthews, L. J. Goodhew, Frederick German, C. J. Trowell, John Taylor, S. J. Jacobs and W. E. Spice, and so about 1925 there was a fine compact set of buildings: Church, Guild Room, Vestries and School Hall. So the church continued for about 20 years until the disaster of January, 1944, when the Church was utterly lost by enemy action.

“The opening weeks of 1944 were not so quiet. On the night of Saturday 29th January came the air-raid that had long been feared, when hundreds incendiary bombs fell on Sittingbourne. The Methodist Church was not fortunate. Children attending a meeting of the Youth Club in the adjoining schoolroom were the first to notice the fires there. Attempts were made to deal with the fires but there was a serious delay between the time fire engines from other towns arrived and action to put out the fires was taken. In a report by the Deputy regional Commissioner it was stated that the 14 minutes delay was 'due to the trouble experienced with the hydrant cover, a saving of time might well have been effected if another line of hose had been had been connected”.
Dr P Bellingham (a local historian), records in her book 'An illustrated History of Sittingbourne and Milton'...
The result was that the Methodist Church was gutted.
