Welcome
Methodism may be said to have been born on 24th May, 1738, at Aldersgate Street when John 'Wesley went through that great mystical experience which be describes in these words, "I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt that I did trust in Christ, Christ alone for my salvation, and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death." For the rest of his life Wesley travelled the whole of the United Kingdom proclaiming the Good News. He passed through Sittingbourne many times and on several occasions he preached here. We have no records of the actual founding of a Society, but it is very probable that there was a little band of converts who assembled together for the weekly class meeting and prayer meeting. There are, however, documents extant that tell of the building of a Chapel at the end of the Eighteenth Century. On 5th April, 1796, a certain John Sneath sold to Sarah Leffet land and premises formerly in the possession of one William Doe, whose name is perpetuated in the name of Does Alley . This land was the site of a shop facing the High Street where the entrance gates of the Church Approach now stand.
