Like almost every African city, Nairobi is full of street children - kids who live and sleep on the streets, begging and scavenging for food and scraps. Sanitation and health issues are inevitably very poor and the children are easy prey for pimps, dealers and criminals. In 2002 in one suburb of Nairobi, a group of friends, all members of the same church, decided to try and do something about this in their particular area. Ruiru has a street kid population of about 200 and their aim from the start has been to house each and every one of the children.
With the input of the Grassroots Trust, a Christian charity based in Surrey and some local business contributions, they have made a home for over 50 children. The centre is a secure loving home and the children are slowly being put back into education and into society. These children and young people are the Watu Wa Maana (Kiswahili for "Very Important People") of the centre and you will rarely see such life and joy exhibited whilst coping with such difficult conditions.
