LITTLE did Kathleen King realise that visiting a coffee morning at Sittingbourne Methodist Church would leave her blushing, as she did 50 years ago. Kathleen was the first bride to walk down the aisle of the newly rebuilt church, on 18 October, 1952, when she married Asa King. So, when she heard the church was celebrating the golden jubilee of its new building she popped in for old times' sake - and ended up face-to-face with her wedding photo. Kathleen (77), of Bourne Grove, Sittingbourne, admitted she was close to tears when she saw the picture of her and her husband leaving the church covered in confetti. She added brought back many happy and sad memories. Asa died 21 years ago. But my wedding day was the happiest day of my life." She added: "The church is full of my happiest memories. My two daughters were christened and married there and three of my five grandchildren were also christened at the church." As part of the celebrations, the church also held two performances of Adrian Snell's musical The Passion, which portrays the last weeks of Christ's life. Church member Kathy Skipp wrote and directed a drama to accompany the musical. The Rev Christopher Bishop said: "The weekend was inspiring and was a fitting way to celebrate our past, present and optimism for the future." The church was officially re-opened on Saturday, 11 October, 1952. Enemy bombs destroyed the original gothic-style building in the Second World War, on 29th January, 1944. © Kent Messenger Group
